Something Real

about

Somebody asked me recently, what do you see happening in this younger generation of the church? I didn’t really get much chance to think, but the first thing that came to mind was, “I think people are looking for something real”. I see people wanting more than Sunday morning church and gathering in the week in living rooms with an acoustic guitar just to worship. I see people fasting social media to prioritise real connection with God and with each other. I see people being willing to open up about struggles and not pretend that life is perfect.

I had this chorus come to mind a few weeks ago and rewrote the lyrics a bunch of times as I started to think about different ways it applied in my own life: feeling frustrated with the constant noise of social media, dissatisfaction with Sunday-morning-only Christianity and just going through the motions, and realising my need to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Even good things like ministry can take the focus from the main thing of loving God. So, this song is kind of about all of those things. I want the reality of knowing God, and being his friend more than all the other distractions.

lyrics

I'm done with impersonation, imitation
I want something real
I don't want the next best thing they're offering 'cause
I want something real
I'm done with the endless noise of a thousand voices
I want something real

I'm getting tired of this same routine
I need to break out of this new machine
Take me back to feel the love we had
In the garden where it all began

Through that window I can see a light
I still see it when I close my eyes
I can feel the wind against my skin
I can almost hear you beckoning

I think we were made for something more than this
Not for just existence, but to truly live

I'm done with impersonation, imitation
I want something real
I don't want the next best thing they're offering 'cause
I want something real
I don't want to hide behind a "perfect life" 'cause
I want something real

Lead me out into the open space
Let me hear your voice and see your face
Sometimes life is found in moving slow
It's in these valleys where the flowers grow

Take me to the place where mercy never ends
I don't want success, I want to be your friend
